Lensbaby "Be Seen in D.C." exhibition

I am pleased to report that one of my images was selected for the Lensbaby-sponsored exhibition called "Be Seen in D.C.", which will be on display at the VisArts gallery in Rockville, Maryland in March 2011. The jurors were Missy Loewe, Executive Director of the Washington School of Photography, Kate Fraser of the Fraser Gallery (Bethesda, Maryland), and Parker Pfister, who is a Canon Explorer of Light. I really love the images selected, especially the top 3 winners, so you may want to check it out.

Leba Marquez

Leba Marquez will have an imaged featured in the upcoming, Human + Being exhibition at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado. Phil Borges was the juror and selected the above image from a pool of 1,500 images. Big congrats!

Verner Soler, Nancy Baron, and Aline Smithson will have work in a portrait show, Look At Me Now: Portraiture 2010, opening tomorrow night at Hous Projects Gallery in the Pacific Design Center from 5-8:30 pm. The show will be expanded and have a second opening on Saturday, Feb 12th.

Karen Florek presents The Sacred Moment

Last Spring, Karen Florek signed up to take a class from Joel Meyerowitz at the Palm Springs Photo Festival. When she arrived to take the class, she was told it had been over sold and they were looking for volunteers to take another class. Karen has always been one to take lemons and turn them into lemonade, and she decided to change directions and take a class from Kenro Izu. And from that experience, created this show. If you are out in the area, stop by to see some amazing work.....

Last April, as part of the annual Palm Springs Photo Festival, Japanese born landscape photographer Kenro Izu, led eight participants into Joshua Tree National Park, to share his views on exploring the spiritual qualities of the land with the camera. Izu is renowned for his serenely, beautiful images of some of the world’s most sacred places. “It is important to empty one’s mind” he teaches, “…to sit, look, listen, wait for the light, and the location to photograph will reveal itself”.

Under Izu’s guidance, artists Tom Brewster, Kim Cochrane, Karen Florek, Martin Ledford, Judy Nayer, Jasmine Swope and James Walker set up their equipment in the pre-dawn darkness of the national park and waited for the magic… (the “magic light” is known as dusk and dawn among photographers). The group returns this January with thirty color and black & white photographs on view at Joshua Tree Art Gallery (JTAG).

During a photography series of “Light Over Ancient Angkor” in Cambodia, Izu was deeply moved to help children disfigured by land mines He created the non-profit, Friends Without A Border, then later in 1999, he opened Angkor Hospital for Children to provide nurturing pediatric care, medical education and community outreach. Those wishing to contribute to this organization can go to www.fwab.org. Despite his busy exhibition schedule and speaking engagement at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art this month, Izu will be present at the JTAG reception January 15th.

Joshua Tree Art Gallery is a collectively run art space that provides exhibition opportunities for selected contemporary Southern California artists. Celebrating its one year anniversary, JTAG has hosted curators, monthly exhibits and the annual Artists Residency program that brings artists from around the world to Joshua Tree every summer.

Next week is Photo L.A.! You knew that right? Thought so.

This is just a simple reminder to come out and take it all in. Photo L.A. is of course over at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium again for its 20th anniversary of the biggest west of the Mississippi photo fair! Opening night gala is January 13th from 6 – 9pm, and the fair itself will run from January 14th through the 17th…check their website for all the details. Show up and buy a print (maybe) or a book (definitely) and support the L.A. photo scene and your fellow artists; not to mention receive plenty of inspiration from all of the wonderful work they will have displayed. At no other time this year will you have more opportunities to experience this much work up close and personal, the way it was meant to be seen!

On that note, CENTER will be running Review L.A. across the street at the Doubletree Hotel on Friday and Saturday (14th and 15th). Hopefully some of you have taken advantage of the opportunity and signed up for at least a few reviews. I did it last year and it was phenomenal! I don’t use that word lightly either. It was such an incredible boost to me both personally and professionally. I’m not signed up this year, but I am donating my time to them as a volunteer. I’ll be there all day on Saturday the 14th, so please stop by and say hello! Meeting my fellow photographers is just as meaningful and rewarding as getting reviews and I’d love to see you there! Other than myself, you’ll also see volunteers Laurie McCormick, Jamie Johnson, Liz Huston, Enrique Ahumada, and Shay McAtee helping out…and with a little luck, we may squeeze a review or two out of it for doing so (fingers crossed). The wondrous and enigmatic Aline Smithson will be one of the reviewers as well, and if you’re lucky, you just may catch a glimpse of her giving reviews and working extremely hard, as all of the reviewers do. One last thing… I especially want to point out the Open Review, which is open to the general public on Friday evening, the 14th, from 6 – 8pm. Yet another reason to come out and show some support!

Aline has done an amazing job of building this photo community, so do your best to take advantage of it and do some networking. If you don’t do it, no one else will! I really hope to see you all there!
